How to Register with an HMO in Israel After Aliyah
In Israel, access to the health system starts before the first doctor visit. For a new immigrant, the practical first step is registering with an HMO as early as possible.
1. When registration can be done
According to the National Insurance Institute, a new immigrant can register with an HMO immediately upon arrival, at the Ministry of Integration offices in the airport.
If registration was not completed there, there are still official alternatives.
2. Official ways to register
- through any Israel Post branch;
- through the National Insurance website, once the data from the Interior Ministry reaches the system;
- in person at a National Insurance branch if the early period was missed.
The official page also states that online registration through the National Insurance website becomes possible about three weeks after arrival, once the data has been integrated.
3. Why it should not be delayed
If a new immigrant does not register within 90 days from the date of aliyah, registration after that point can only be completed through the National Insurance branch nearest the place of residence.
This does not cancel health coverage rights, but it does make the process less convenient. The practical conclusion is simple: if you did not register at the airport, it is better to handle it early.
