Rent Assistance in Israel: How to Apply and What to Do After Approval

Government rent assistance runs through a formal process. In practice, it is not enough just to submit the application. You also need to keep your lease details current and make sure your eligibility remains valid.

1. Where assistance starts

According to official materials for new immigrants, rent support during the first period after aliyah may be included in the Absorption Basket. Starting from the eighth month, eligible new immigrants can receive assistance from the Ministry of Construction and Housing directly into a bank account.

2. How to apply

The official Ministry of Construction and Housing service page states that a new application can be submitted online or through one of the housing assistance registration companies.

  • Digital submission is free.
  • Manual submission through a registration company costs 40 NIS.
  • The online route requires identification through the national government login system.
  • After review, the Ministry sends its response by email or SMS.

3. What matters after approval

Approval of the application alone is not enough if you are renting on the private market and want the payment linked to your active lease.

The official lease-update service states that:

  • the service is only for people who already have valid entitlement;
  • the apartment must be rented on the private market and not from a first-degree relative;
  • the Ministry may ask for proof of bank account details;
  • once the updated lease is approved, payment is transferred within up to 10 business days.

4. What to check first

  • Whether your entitlement is still valid.
  • Whether the validity period has expired.
  • Whether your current lease details were actually submitted.
  • Whether the bank details match the applicant information.
